Women with lipedema want something very simple: to feel normal.
To live a normal life, eat without fear, move without pain, and be able to enjoy the day without constantly thinking about “what can I eat” or “what will make me inflamed.”
But the reality is that this diagnosis is complex and sensitive. Many things affect us: stress, the weather, hormonal changes, what we eat, or whether we move or not. And that can be very frustrating.
One of the questions I hear most is:
If I have lipedema, do I have to follow a structured diet my whole life?
The answer is not necessarily.
Not all women with lipedema need to follow a rigid plan forever.
The important thing is to learn to take care of your body without losing freedom.
Here I share 4 key tips to do it your way, but without neglecting what matters most.
1️⃣ Take care of your blood sugar
Controlling glucose does not mean eliminating all carbohydrates, but keeping it stable during the day.
Most studies on lipedema —although they are still few— agree that an excess of carbohydrates can increase inflammation.
Studies suggest that one in three women with lipedema could have insulin resistance, so maintaining stable blood sugar levels can help you a lot.
👉 You can confirm it with tests such as hemoglobin A1C or fasting glucose.
And if you don't have insulin resistance, it can still help you control sweet cravings, which are very common in us.
2️⃣ Practice trial and error
We don't all react the same to the same foods.
That's why the real “diet” of a woman with lipedema is trial and error.
For example, try a week without dairy: no cheese, yogurt, kefir, or butter.
Observe how you feel. Then try with gluten.
It's not about eliminating everything forever, but about listening to how your body responds.
That awareness is what really transforms your relationship with food.
3️⃣ Learn to read labels
Reading labels is a way to defend yourself against inflammation. Everything that comes in a bag, can, or jar has a list of ingredients.
And even if it says “keto,” “light,” “natural,” or “vegan,” that does not guarantee that it doesn't have additives, colorings, or gums that can activate your immune system.
👉 The key: look at the back and choose products with short and simple lists.
It's not about obsessing, but about making conscious decisions.
4️⃣ Include anti-inflammatory foods every day
Make a list of the 10 anti-inflammatory foods that you can easily get where you live:
olive oil, garlic, turmeric, ginger, berries, avocado, salmon, green vegetables, among others.
And make sure to eat them daily.
It's not very useful to have them at home if you only use them once a week.
These foods are the ones that really provide the nutrients that help reduce inflammation.
In summary
It's not about following a diet forever, but about learning to know yourself, nourish yourself, and take care of your body flexibly.
Anti-inflammatory eating is a path, not a rule.
And if you don't know where to start or you feel overwhelmed, you don't have to do it alone.
