A few days ago, I received this message on Instagram:
Lipedema and postpartum.
I feel like everything fell apart during pregnancy.
I know so many women can relate 100% to this fear.
And it's that, if you've just had your baby and you feel:
-
That everything hurts twice as much.
-
Swelling that doesn't seem to subside.
-
Tiredness and heaviness in your legs.
-
Water retention at a "my rings no longer fit" level.
-
And the lipedema symptoms have flared up.
👗 And, to top it off, more pant sizes...
Breathe.
It is completely normal to feel desperate
and feel like you are suddenly inhabiting a body that has changed too much. 🪫
Even, on bad days,
you end up thinking that this is now permanent
and that you will stay like this forever.
But today I come to tell you something very important
(and I want you to read it carefully):
Yes, you can see changes,
even with lipedema and in the middle of postpartum.
The big mistake we make is panicking and wanting to "fix" our body with shortcuts, tricks, extreme diets, or the latest hack,
forgetting what is really going on inside.
Before giving you any "postpartum diet", we first have to know your entire health history. 🧩
Because it is not the same to approach a woman who only has lipedema, than a woman who also presents:
✅ SOMP
✅ Anemia
✅ Endometriosis
✅ Thyroid issues
✅ Insulin resistance
✅ Or who is taking certain medications.
All that completely changes the rules of the game. 🎢
In addition, we need to thoroughly review your postpartum.
In this stage there are many factors (beyond food)
☑️ Was it a natural birth or a C-section?
☑️ Are you breastfeeding or not?
☑️ How are you sleeping?
(Asking a mom to sleep perfectly with a baby at home is almost a cruel joke 👶🏻, but it has to be evaluated).
☑️ How is your digestion?
☑️ How did your latest labs turn out?
☑️ Is there a lot of water retention?
☑️ And most importantly:
How are YOU feeling?
Good.
I share with you from my own experience:
today, at my 32 days postpartum,
I am focusing exactly on these 4 areas
(and this is where I would suggest you start):
👉 I want to start today1. Flexible anti-inflammatory nutrition
🥑 From my side, which is nutrition,
I know that the first thing is to understand your real day.
It is useless for me to just tell you:
“eat more vegetables”,
“lower the carbs” or
“do an anti-inflammatory diet”.
That is not enough or realistic!
We have to see other factors:
- What you eat for breakfast, lunch, and dinner on a busy day.
- If you cook or order food because you don't have time.
- How your routine with the baby is.
- How much free time you really have.
- If when you go back to work it will be in the office or at home.
- 📌 What things ARE possible to adjust in your life TODAY.
The goal is NOT to do a strict diet,
perfect and impossible to sustain in the middle of postpartum.
The goal is for you to regain control of your daily eating
with a flexible anti-inflammatory nutrition,
that helps you lower inflammation, pain, and sizes.
Without adding another gram of stress!
2. Strategic movement 🚶
Movement also matters to stimulate your lymphatic system.
And no, nothing intense please.
In postpartum, something as simple as
going out for a walk with your stroller
can be a great option,
as long as your doctor has already given you the okay.
3. Rest and stress management 🌙
We cannot demand from an exhausted body
that it deflames by magic.
Understanding your fatigue peaks,
supporting you to sleep as best as possible
and looking for strategies so that your nervous system gets out of “alert mode”
is fundamental so that your legs stop feeling heavy.
4. Physiotherapy / manual lymphatic drainage ✨
It can also be a good idea to check with a professional
if manual lymphatic drainage is an option for you.
In my case, at my 32 days postpartum,
I still haven't resumed them but they are coming.
Before I used to do 1 to 2 drainages a month
and personally they helped me a lot
with the feeling of heaviness and inflammation.
But, like everything, it has to be individualized.
Not everyone needs the same thing.
And not everything is solved with a single tool.
The reality is this:
Yes, it is possible to see and feel much better after pregnancy, even dealing with lipedema. 🪫
But let's be honest, this is not magic.
It is not about taking on the typical “strict postpartum diet”,
trying to follow it to the letter and adding more stress.
It is about understanding your complete health puzzle 🧩
and creating a flexible anti-inflammatory nutrition
that is truly realistic and sustainable
for the beautiful (and exhausting) madness of the stage you are living TODAY.
