Hi everyone! I'm Mónica, and yes, I'm a nutritionist, but I've also experienced the frustrations of dieting. Today I want to talk to you about a very important topic, especially if, like me, you have lipedema or a tendency toward inflammation.
I've also followed many diets without getting the results I was looking for. That's why I want to share three fundamental pillars that I've experienced firsthand. If you make them a priority, you'll start to see and feel real changes.
Pillar #1: Losing weight isn't the same as reducing inflammation (and this changes everything!)
This is the most important thing to start seeing results.
Losing weight usually focuses on creating a calorie deficit (eating less than your body burns). But eating to reduce inflammation is different: it's about giving your body the nutrients it needs to reduce inflammation and cutting back on foods that trigger it.
For example, a diet soda may help you cut calories, but it won't reduce inflammation: it contains colorings, sweeteners, and additives that aren't beneficial.
If you've already tried everything with a calorie deficit and still aren't seeing changes, you may not be focusing on what's essential: reducing inflammation in the body.
When you change your perspective, you start paying more attention to food quality. And that's where real transformation happens.
Pillar #2: Nutrition is a long-term commitment, not a diet with an expiration date
We're used to thinking of nutrition as temporary: a 30-day diet or a challenge lasting a few weeks.
But if you have lipedema, you need a plan that stays with you for life, not something that ends and leaves you unsure what to do next.
It's fine to get excited about a new diet, but what matters is what you go back to afterward. Your day-to-day habits are what make the difference.
I know being patient with lipedema is difficult. We've been waiting a long time. But the long term does bring results.
It's about building habits you can maintain: trying recipes, finding what you enjoy, and making it part of your life.
The goal isn't to follow something that feels forced, but to create your new normal without feeling like you're “on a diet.”
Pillar #3: A good balance of macronutrients: protein, healthy fats, carbohydrates, fiber, and proper hydration
Eating a balanced diet is key.
When you eat enough protein, you feel better, fuller, and have fewer cravings.
Carbohydrates are also necessary, but choose those with more fiber—whole-grain and gluten-free, if possible.
Healthy fats are essential too, especially for lipedema and hormonal health.
If you strike a good balance between protein, healthy fats, and the right carbohydrates, along with more fiber and enough water, you'll reduce inflammation and have more energy.
For years, diets have promoted eliminating one of these food groups. But with conditions like lipedema, balance is what helps:
An anti-inflammatory diet, moderate in carbohydrates and high in protein and healthy fats, always tailored to you.
You can eat anti-inflammatory foods, but without balance, you won't see results.
Where should you start?
This is just a summary, but trust me: these three pillars are the foundation for seeing real changes if you have lipedema or chronic inflammation.
